Life Transitions

Separation, Divorce, Empty Nest, Grief & Loss

Life transitions impact everyone. Perhaps you are grieving the loss of someone you love. Maybe you’ve recently gotten a divorce, or your children are grown and no longer part of your daily life. You may find yourself one day grieving the loss of opportunities, of not having a child, of suffering a miscarriage. Our lives don’t always turn out the way we’ve envisioned them, and sometimes that can be incredibly difficult to accept.

Sometimes life throws us curveballs. We need to be able to effectively respond to these circumstances. At times, this can be incredibly stressful. Transitions can shake our identities and may cause us to feel anxious, depressed, angry, or insecure. Perhaps you don’t feel like you have the tools to cope with whatever it is you’re dealing with. You may regress emotionally, or (temporarily) lose some capacity to handle everyday life.

How can I cope more effectively with challenging life transitions?

These circumstances do not need to define us, nor undermine us. While transitions may sometimes make us feel “smaller,” it doesn’t have to be that way. Transitions can be an opportunity for you to become even more of your best self and not be crippled by the stress of uncertainty. It’s about building resilience, bouncing back from difficulty, and having strong & healthy relationships.

Our team at Four Corners is personally and professionally seasoned in dealing with many of life’s transitions, and we can help you to navigate the challenges and truly be better for them. Four Corners offers you a safe space to discern your next steps and debrief on your experiences so they do not become traumatic and overwhelm you. We can help create a narrative for your transition from a place of confidence, well-being, and strength. There is no right or wrong way to go through a transition.
We are here to help you find your way to do it.

Here are additional ways we can work with you when you’re dealing with life transitions:

We teach and use proven mindfulness tools to help clients find relief. Don’t worry, no experience is necessary! We will talk you through it every step of the way.

With Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, you will develop a strong sense of Self and learn how to have a healthy internal relationship with your thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs and impulses (your “parts”). This will lead to healthier relationships on the outside, too.

Through The Polyvagal Theory, we will teach about your nervous system and how it responds to cues of safety or danger, including stress and trauma.

We are happy to work alongside your primary care doctor or psychiatrist to ensure you receive all the care you need. We also often collaborate with complementary providers, such as acupuncturists and chiropractors.

We want you to thrive in all areas of your life. Our team will help you work through whatever is causing you distress and help you go from just dealing with life to true healing and growth - so that you can live the life that is waiting for you!

You might have some questions and concerns about therapy for life transitions…

  • Life transitions are about change, and change affects everyone differently. If you feel like it’s harder to navigate what you are going through, or you feel like you aren’t coping as well as you used to, that can be a sign that you need more support. If you are finding yourself isolating, turning to alcohol, food, or other substances or behaviors (like scrolling on social media for hours) to help you deal with feelings or to numb out, those can all be signs that something is out of balance. Therapy can help you talk about what you are going through, identify your options, and discover your strengths. With support, you can develop resilience and learn to move through this time of transition with a new sense of who you are and how you want to live.
