True Confidence offers a supportive and judgment-free space for those who’ve been socialized as men to explore how traditional ideas of masculinity hold us back from personal growth goals.

You may have some questions about Group Therapy…

  • Group therapy provides a safe and confidential space to talk about your challenges and practice new skills with others who share similar experiences and also want to learn and grow together. Within the safe and confidential structure of group therapy, group members learn effective ways to communicate without shame or blame, listen non-defensively, deal with conflict effectively and build safe and satisfying relationships. Group therapy helps members to learn about themselves as they receive support and feedback from the leader and the other members. Some group structures include specific skill-building exercises.

  • Group therapy is different from individual therapy, and can be either an adjunct to individual work or beneficial on its own. Interacting with others in a structured way can provide an opportunity for trying new behaviors and receiving feedback that wouldn’t happen in “the real world.” Group therapy helps members to feel less alone in their experiences and normalizes feelings and behaviors that members may carry some shame about. Effective group therapy is a powerful and transformative experience that provides a unique space to learn, reflect, take emotional and interpersonal risks, and grow into a stronger and healthier person, both with oneself and in relationships.

  • Yes! We offer both process groups and psychoeducational groups. A process group focuses on the here and now experiences of the group members in order to increase self-understanding and awareness of relationship patterns, and practice new ways of interacting with others. A psychoeducational group is focused on teaching new skills, such as mindfulness meditation for stress management.

  • Each group has guidelines for participation that are developed by the leader(s). You can talk with the group leader to get a better understanding of the expectations for participation. In general, we recommend participation in an ongoing process group for at least 3 months in order to fully benefit from the experience. Psychoeducational or skills-building groups have a specific number of sessions, usually between six and ten.

  • We are an “out of network” practice with all major insurance companies. Clients pay us directly at the time of service and a Superbill (a statement for reimbursement) is available to submit to insurance for reimbursement according to the client’s insurance plan. In most cases, a portion of the cost of group therapy is covered by insurance. You can submit for reimbursement for both individual and group therapy, if you are participating in both at the same time.

  • We are here to answer your questions! Reach out to our Client Care Coordinator by phone or via our contact form, and she will connect you with the group therapy leader(s).

You can also read more in this article, “Psychotherapy: Understanding Group Therapy” by the American Psychological Association and about one of our clinician’s experiences of group therapy in this blog post.
